Susan Boyle?

Welcome to 2010..it shall be a great year. I so declare it. I feel that I need to blog about Susan Boyle.

First let me say that I think she is a sweet woman, with a triumphant and touching story..here's the but. I don't think she's as good as we wish her to be. I  believe her courage and story transcends her talent. That's not enough for me. She just set the all time record for cd sales for a woman in the first week of release. A cd with no original material. All cover tunes..of other artists who wrote and set the creative style for those songs..yet they don't have the sales record. We have moved past wanting authenticity and originality and moved right into accessabilty.. that could be us/you up on stage. If Susan can make it big.. well.. anyone can. It's magic.

The music business is a lottery. I'm not being bitter or pissy when I make this next statement. I feel like I've wasted 40 years taking guitar lessons, missing family birthdays and weddings while I was on the road playing clubs. Not having a day job because it was important to me to make myself available to write songs, often with writers better than me.(that's how you get better).  I thought it was important to approach music as a full time job. Apparently now..anyone can do what I do!? If I didn't love it so much, I could have chosen a way easier road to this point.

Nike has a saying "These guys are Good". I'm not sure that sentiment exists in the music industry in reference to that professional motto. I'm sure professional athletes wouldn't mind if making the big leagues was a lottery. It would make a great story..he/she would be one of us. We could see how many home runs a team could hit in one inning off a "great story". And I'm sure demeaning the years toiled playing high school and college ball..not to mention the bus trips in the minor leagues wouldn't bother the players at all. I'm sure they would openly embrace a "Susan Boyle" or one of the reality show Idol winners. Have we set the bar so low..everyone can jump it!? I believe this."it's supposed to be hard, if it wasn't everyone would do it"!

I believe Susan Boyle has a beautiful story, but I believe she is just a pretty okay singer..and maybe that's enough..maybe the jokes on me? I know it's not. I wouldn't change my life and how i've approached my career and how I will in the future. I just want you to think about what I've addressed. I want you to appreciate the commitment made by many "lifer" musicians and singers who never got the break that Susan did. Many of them teach your kids to sing and play an instrument. We need to stop demanding record companies give us what we want and allow cool original and authentic artists give us what we didn't know we wanted. We're gonna wake up one day from this Walmart dream and realize we all have the same bed sheets(cd) on our beds. Dreams do exist for everyone..hope is something we all need...but as a lottery, success is far from sweet and somewhat stolen.

I think I've ranted enough. My kids are great. Josh is still liking his first year of high school and Katy has decided to go to University and become an English teacher..cool huh? The new cd is getting closer to done. Beginning of May at the latest and we'll have a new single in about 3 weeks.

I hope you're well..take care..Jamie
